At the General Assembly of SportAccord held at the SwissTech Convention Center in Lausanne (SUI) on 22nd April 2016, the Members decided by large majority to appoint FIBA’s Patrick Baumann as the new President of SportAccord.
The newly elected President will head up the SportAccord organisation which represents the union for both Olympic and non-Olympic international sports federations with immediate effect.
Baumann replaces FIS President Gian Franco Kasper who has exercised the function of an ad-hoc interim chairman of the SportAccord Council since mid-June last year.
Speaking of his newly appointed role as President, Patrick Baumann said:
“It is a great honour to be appointed President of SportAccord and I am very much looking forward to the road ahead. There is much to be done, however, the message is clear. The membership wants to go back to a calm environment and to be able to grow the sports and speak with one voice.”
President Baumann’s involvement in sport began at an early age with basketball. He started with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) in 1994 and by 2003, Patrick Baumann took over the position of Secretary General of FIBA.
Beyond basketball, Baumann has been appointed to commissions and panels of a large number of sports-related organisations including the IOC's Evaluation Commissions for the Beijing and London Olympics. He was elected an IOC Member in 2007.
Baumann is also a Member of the International Council of Arbitration for Sport (ICAS) and Council Member of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF).
