Russia unveils new Sochi Olympics banknote
Russian Central Bank said Wednesday that it has issued a special banknote edition for the upcoming Sochi Winter Olympic Games.
With 100 days ahead of the opening ceremony of the Games, the bank said it would print 20 million bills of 100-ruble (about $3.1) denomination.
Unlike traditional Russian banknotes, the Olympic bluish bill has vertical design. It depicts a snowboarder and several Sochi Olympic Park's sites.
The 100-ruble bills currently in circulation have traditional horizontal design.
The CB did not tell if the Olympic banknotes will be circulated at their nominal or be used as "souvenir" money.
Earlier, the CB has minted a 25-rouble commemorative coin with torch relay depicted. That denomination has not been in circulation at the moment.
In March, Russian state-owned Sberbank started to sale rectangular coins featuring a polar bear, one of three Sochi Olympic mascots. Those coins have also not gone into general circulation.
