Germany takes Nordic Combined Team gold
Germany is the new World Champion in the Nordic Combined Team event as the team of Tino Edelmann, Fabian Riessle, Johannes Rydzek and Eric Frenzel took home the gold medal.

It was a long wait for the Germans, who had a 28 year gap since winning their last gold medal in the Team Event. But when Johannes Rydzek crossed the finish line an impressive 23.1 seconds ahead of the nearest competitor, the full celebration began. Rydzek is on a roll in Falun as it is his second gold medal at these World Championships after he also won the Individual Gundersen on Friday.

Norway (Joergen Graabak, Mikko Kokslien, Magnus Hovdal Moan and Haavard Klemetsen) took the silver medal finishing 16.5 seconds ahead of the bronze medal team from France (Francois Braud, Sebastien Lacroix, Maxime Laheurte, Jason Lamy Chappuis).

Germany had the advantage the entire day thanks to four good jumps to start things off in the morning. The Germans closed the jumping round with a total score of 448.3 points, giving them a four second advantage in the race. Japan started the race in second position with 445.5 points thanks to an excellent jump from Akito Watabe of 99.5 metres, but in the cross country part, the Japanese were not a threat to make the podium.

France took third in the jumping portion, but the highlight of the morning came when Norway’s Klemetsen set a new Nordic combined hill record as he went 101 meters, but it was still only enough to put the Norwegians in fifth place after the jumping as they had to rely heavily on their racing skills to take the silver medal.

The silver medal extends Norway’s podium streak in the Nordic Combined Team Event to six straight editions. The last time the Norwegians missed the podium was in 2003 in Val di Fiemme when they took fourth. During the same period, the Germans only missed the podium once, which came last year when France topped the field followed by the Norwegians and surprise bronze medalists USA.

Tomorrow no events are scheduled across the entire Nordic World Ski Championships with action resuming in Cross-Country on Tuesday. Nordic Combined will be back in action on Wednesday with the Individual Gundersen Large Hill.
