Holmlund and Chapuis top Ski Cross field in Tegernsee
The Audi FIS Ski Cross World Cup staged its second of two races in Tegernsee (GER) and crowed Anna Holmlund (SWE) and Jean Frederic Chapuis (FRA) as the winners.
Holmlund is coming on strong late in the season, she also won one of the two races in Are (SWE) last week and now has six podiums on the year. Meanwhile, for Chapuis, the win capped an amazing weekend as he was the king of the mountain in Tegernsee on both days. Chapuis is also having a strong showing of late, he also earned a victory and a second-place finish in the Are races last weekend.
It was an amazing second day during the Audi FIS Ski Cross World Cup in Tegernsee (GER) with plenty of photo-finish action. After the snowfall over the night the athletes had to struggle with challenging conditions on the course whole day long. The winter atmosphere however seemed to motivate the athletes as we have seen an incredible competition.
Holmlund looked very confident, coming second in the qualification and winning every heat afterwards. Even Andrea Limbacher, who topped the qualis in the morning, could not prevent the domination of the Swedish champion who leads the way in the finals from start to the finish line.
“I’m very happy with the win. Yesterday I was slow at the start and couldn’t get a good position from the beginning. Today it was not a problem anymore and I was able to ride as I wanted” said Holmlund.
With the win today Holmlund increased her advantage to more than 100 points in the leader board over the second Sammy Smith. The Swiss Star had an unusual slow start and while fighting her way back she initiated too much contact and was later disqualified by the jury decision. The second place on Sunday race claimed Andrea Limbacher (AUT) and the third place went to Ophelie David (FRA).
The win puts Holmlund 108 points ahead of Switzerland’s Fanny Smith in the race for the Overall World Cup title.
In the men’s big final, it was the battle of the champions for the top spot on the podium as reigning World Champion from Kreischberg Filip Filsar was topped by current Olympic Champion Chapuis for the victory. Third place went to Sweden’s Viktor Andersson.
Chapuis showed he is in incredible form and claimed a “hat-trick” with third consecutive win. “Today the conditions were much harder than yesterday and as the snow was much slower, we had to fight for the position until the final meters” said Chapuis.
With yet another win his advantaged in the overall standing over the second Victor Oehling Norberg increased to 92 points.
Flisar showed the determination that got him the World Champion title. Flisar fought again for each position like he did in Kreischberg. While the Swedish favorite Oehling Norberg dropped out in the quarterfinals, he was worthily substituted by a youngster Viktor Anderson, who won his first podium in the World Cup. Jonas Lenherr (SUI) rounded out the final with his best performance of season.
Incredible emotions are awaiting ski cross fans with only two more races until the end of the season. The final stop in Menegeve (FRA) is scheduled for the second week of March. With two men and four ladies still fighting for the overall win, it looks like a very interesting wrap up ahead of us.
