FIS Telemark World Championships – Mueller and Reymond unstoppable
Friday, 27th February 2015 saw the last day of competition of the 2015 FIS Telemark World Championships at Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
The revered Classic was the last of the races. This race which sees athletes digging deep into their reserves is the longest of the three discipline races. Traditionally Classic races see the fastest men and women complete the course somewhere between 3 and 4 minutes. Mt Werner’s Vagabond with a vertical difference of over 500m run was the venue for this World Championship Classic. A handful of juniors opted to compete in both senior and junior events showing perhaps the resilience and fortitude of telemark athletes.
In the junior category Matti LOPEZ of France found some late form taking a surprising gold with Rok SMEJIC of Slovenia skiing into 3rd place for the first Slovenian podium for a long time. Germany’s Johanna HOLZMANN showed her teeth to move into pole position ahead of favourites Argeline TAN-BOUQUET and Maelle FROISSART of France. In the senior category Phil LAU and Bastien DAYER both put in credible performances but DAYER couldn’t convert this into a podium place. Tobias MUELLER and Amelie REYMOND proved unstoppable with a ‘triple’ bag of gold in this WSC. Simone OERHLI who we had not seen as a contender at these WSC so far and TAN-BOUQUET took silver and bronze respectively in the ladies and LAU and Nicolas MICHEL of Switzerland took silver and bronze respectively in the men.
