Kiriyama and Schuler take slopestyle JWC golds
After high winds forced the postponement of Friday's scheduled slopestyle qualifying session, a full day of qualifiers and finals went down on Friday at the Valmalenco 2015 Junior World Championships.
In the ladies' event, it was Nanaho Kiriyama (JPN) taking home the gold medal. Kiriyama has been dominating FIS events in Japan this season, and came into Valmalenco riding a streak of four straight wins dating back to last season. She was able to put down a second-run score of 72.40 that would stand up to all challengers.
Second place and silver went to Sandra Moestue Eie (NOR), with a score of 70.20, while 15-year-old Caroline Claire (USA) would take the bronze with a score of 67.80 in just her third FIS-sanctioned event.
On the men's side, Luca Schuler (SUI) threw down an incredible final run to take the gold. Having just come off a third-place result at the final slopestyle World Cup of the season in Silvaplana, 17-year-old Schuler was clearly primed and ready for competition in Valmalenco, and putting up a score of 91.00 in proved that.
Second place went to Beau James Wells (NZL), who also stepped up in a big way in his final run, earning a score of 89.60 that was agonizingly close to stealing the gold away from Schuler. Birk Ruud (NOR) capped off a two-podium day for Norway with a score of 88.60 for the bronze medal.
Action from the 2015 Junior World Championships continues on Sunday with halfpipe qualifiers ahead of Monday's halfpipe finals.
