Dawid Kubacki wins also in Hinterzarten

Dawid Kubacki also won the second individual competition of the FIS Grand Prix 2015. The Pole came in first in Hinterzarten with jumps on 103.5 m and 100.5 m and a total of 266.5 points. Overall World Cup winner Severin Freund and Japan's Kento Sakuyama followed second and third.

Kubacki already had a good lead of more than seven points over Freund after the first round and he was able to defend this lead in the final.

Freund, who was not participating in the first Grand Prix competitions in Wisla, presented himself in a very good shape, jumped on 101 m and 102.5 m, scored 264.1 points and completed a great home event in the Black Forrest for the German team, after they had already won the team competition on Friday.

Career best for Sakuyama and Leyhe

In front of about 3 000 spectators, Japanese Kento Sakuyama achieved the biggest success of his career so far with jumps on 100.5 m and 101.5 m for 260.6 points. He came in 3.2 points ahead of Stephan Leyhe, who landed on a career best fourth place with 101 m and 100.5 m.

Top result for German team

Thanks to Andreas Wellinger, fifth with 256.5 points, Richard Freitag (255.6 points) in seventh and Andreas Wank (254.6 points) in ninth, five German were in the Top 10 and provided an outstanding result for the hosting team.

Denis Kornilov will also be very satisfied with his total of 256.1 points and a very good sixth place. Kenneth Gangnes (255.3 points) achieved a top result in eighth, his teammate Rune Velta was tenth with 251.1 points.

A success for the Slovenes seemed to be within reach after the first round, but Jaka Hvala could not defend his third place and finished 11th overall. With the exception of Dawid Kubacki, the Polish team could not follow up on the outstanding performances from Wisla. Piotr Zyla in 12th and Maciej Kot in 17th were not able to fight for the top spots today.

Jarkko Maeaettae showed a good performance and was the best Finn in 13th, followed by four-time Olympic Champion Simon Ammann in 14th. Under perfect conditions for summer ski jumping, world record holder Anders Fannemel was 15th, Peter Prevc, who was strong in the team competition, came in only 18th this time. Without Stefan Kraft the Austrian team didn't have an athlete among the best. Michael Hayboeck shared the 18th place with Prevc and was their best.

Vincent Descombes Sevoie could score a few Grand Prix points for France in 27th.

Dawid Kubacki leads the overall Grand Prix ranking with the maximum of 200 points, clearly ahead of his teammate Piotr Zyla (102 points) and Kenneth Gangnes (92 points). The next individual competition will be held next Friday in Courchevel, France.

Quotes:

Dawid Kubacki (POL): “My jumps yesterday were not that good, I had small things to improve for today. The first jump today was okay, but second one wasn't good, but it was enough to win so I'm happy. There's still a lot of work to do until the next competition and the winter. After my second jump I knew it would be close and I wouldn't have been disappointed with a second or third place. Now we are going to Oberstdorf to train there and then to the next competitions in Einsiedeln and Courchevel."

Severin Freund (GER): "I'm really satisfied with my second place and I'm very happy with the whole weekend. Dawid was amazing in Wisla and also strong today. It would have been possible to win if I had a better first jump but he is a well-deserved winner. The crowd would have liked to see a German win today. The team competition went great for us, we could win in all eight groups. I'm not sure if this has ever happened before. It was a special feeling."

Kento Sakuyama (JPN): "I'm very satisfied with today's result and my jumps. I love this hill, I was training here as a junior already and I know it well. I plan to compete in most of the competitions this summer and so I'll only be in Japan for a very short time."
