Akito Watabe takes the first PCR of the summer
The winner of summer’s first Provisional Competition Round comes from Japan. With 105 metres and a total of 135.8 points, Akito Watabe topped the result list ahead of France’s Francois Braud (101 m; 123.9 p.) and local hero Eric Frenzel (100.5 m; 119.8 p.).
Austrian youngster David Pommer showed a strong jump which had him in the lead for most of the round and on a strong fourth place on the final list (98.5 m: 119 p.). Should the PCR have to be used on Sunday, the result would mean a 48-second head start for Watabe. Frenzel would have to make up a deficit of one minute and four seconds. Johannes Rydzek, Yoshito Watabe, Mario Seidl, Fabian Riessle, Tino Edelmann and Taihei Kato also entered the Top Ten.
France’s Antoine Gerard had a particularly unlucky day. Not only did he have a bad crash in the first training round when the binding of his ski opened in the early flight phase, he also missed the qualification for the individual competition on Sunday by 0.7 points in the end. Other athletes who did not qualify were Alexander Brandner and David Welde.
Manuel Maierhofer, Szczepan Kupczak and Raffaele Buzzi did not pass the equipment control before the jump and were disqualified due to suits not complying to the rules.
