German podium sweep in Oberwiesenthal’s heat
Local hero Eric Frenzel proved to be the best athlete in the first individual competition of the summer and claimed the victory in Oberwiesenthal today. In very warm and sunny weather Frenzel had a start-finish victory and ended his race 11.3 seconds earlier than his teammate Johannes Rydzek. The third position on the podium went to Fabian Rießle who finished 18.5 seconds after the winner, completing the German podium sweep.

Frenzel pleased the crowd with a great jump of 105 metres, the longest jump of the day. His total point score of 132.6 put Frenzel 10 seconds ahead of Japan’s Akito Watabe who showed 103.5 metres (130.2 p.). Czech youngster Tomas Portyk proved once more that he is a force to be reckoned with on the jumping hill and held the third rank with 99.5 metres and 127 points, 22 seconds behind Frenzel.

In a good position to attack were Falun 2015 silver medallist Francois Braud and World Champion Johannes Rydzek who had to start with a time disadvantage of 43 and 50 seconds. The last athlete to attack from within a deficit of one minute was Germany’s Fabian Riessle on rank ten.

In the race, Frenzel held his lead throughout the whole event and was never in real danger from the pursuers. Behind him, the battle was on for the remaining spots on the podium, though. Akito Watabe wasn’t able to hold on to his good position and finally ended on the 15th rank in Oberwiesenthal’s hot and windy conditions. World Champion Johannes Rydzek started the pursuit and proved his cross-country strength by overtaking the athletes in front of him and breaking lose from the pursuing group consisting of Fabian Rießle, Francois Braud, Mario Seidl and Tomas Portyk in the end.

Out of this group, Rießle proved to be the strongest and therefore all three podium ranks went to the German team before the athletes hopped into the fountain behind the podium to cool off after their great performances. Mario Seidl, Francois Braud and Tomas Portyk earned ranks four, five and six. Austrian youngsters Philipp Orter, Bernhard Flaschberger and David Pommer completed a strong Austrian team performance with ranks seven, eight and nine and also Ilkka Herola was able to go home with a Top Ten rank.

Two big names were disqualified: Tino Edelmann due to irregular equipment and World Champion Bernhard Gruber due to an early start.
