Mario Seidl on top in Tschagguns/Partenen
It was Austria’s Mario Seidl who claimed the next victory at the Summer Grand Prix newcomer venue of Tschagguns and Partenen in Austria’s Montafon valley. He crossed the finish line 14 seconds earlier than Akito Watabe from Japan. They were joined on the podium by Fabian Rießle from Germany who claimed the third position, finishing 24.9 seconds behind Seidl.
The jumping round started in nice and even sunny weather but as it progessed, the wind picked up and increased more and more until the jury had to make the decision to cancel the competition round. So, tthe PCR was used and the crowd was happy to see Austrian Mario Seidl lead the starting field and go out on the 4x 2.5- kilometre track as the first athlete, a narrow two seconds ahead of Japan’s Akito Watabe. Eric Frenzel gave chase 21 seconds later. World Champion Johannes Rydzek was ready to pounce from a time disadvantage of 48 seconds and was therefore another hot candidate for a podium result.
Even though the jumping competition had to be cancelled, the day still proved to be an exciting one for the total of 2000 spectators who came to both venues to see the athletes live. In an amazing race, Mario Seidl and Akito Watabe defended their two leading positions for the whole duration and were able to hold on to their respective ranks from the PCR. The big chasing group that had formed already on the first of four laps was not able to close the distance to the two leaders.
Behind the two, the fight for the third position was on full throttle. 10 athletes finished within 15 seconds of each other with Fabian Rießle having the best end and claiming the third position again. World Champion Bernhard Gruber had to be satisfied with the first rank but was in fine spirits after the competition and entered the stage together with the band after the victory ceremony to play guitar and sing two songs for the enthusiastic crowd.
