COC: Clemens Aigner takes clear win

The short Christmas break already ended again, where it started for the ski jumpers a week ago. Seven days after the World Cup, Engelberg now hosts the Continental cup.

In the first competition on Sunday afternoon Clemens Aigner could take a clear win. The 22-year-old Austrian posted jumps on 129 m and 133 m that earned him 284.2 points. It was his second win in the COC.

"After the first round I was very nervous, but I knew that I can trust in my abilities. That worked out great in the second round. Now I'm more than happy about this win and I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's competition", said the winner.

Dawid Kubacki was seventh after the his first jump on 131 m, with the same distance in the final and a total of 269.5 points, the Pole could move up to second overall.

The third place went to Aigner's teammate Markus Schiffner with jumps on 133 m and 130.5 m and 269.1 points.

With his strong performance today, Luca Egloff achieved a success for the hosting team of Switzerland. The 20-year-old finished fourth, a career-best in the Continental Cup for him.

Young German Adrian Sell also showed the by far best performance of his career today and came in sixth in only his third COC competition, behind Cene Prevc of Slovenia in fifth.

Andreas Kofler (7th) and Markus Schiffner (9th) completed the very good team result of the Austrians. Andrzej Stekala was the second-best athlete of the Polish team in eighth. Bor Pavlovcic of Slovenia participated in the COC for the first time and could already celebrate a strong result in tenth.

Disappointing day for Velta and Hilde

World Champion Rune Velta is still struggling with his shape. In his first appearance since the World Cup opening in Klingenthal late November he was only 43rd and failed to qualify for the second round.

It was also not a good day for his teammates Phillip Sjoeen and Tom Hilde. Sjoeen finished only 45th and Hilde was disqualified in the first round because his suit was not in accordance with the rules.

Slovenia's Tilen Bartol (346 points), Halvor Egner Granerud of Norway (310 points) and German Karl Geiger (305 points) are still leading the overall ranking. All three of them will be competing in the 4-Hills-Tournament starting on Monday and are not taking part in the events in Engelberg.
