The Norwegian win this evening was never in danger. Daniel Andre Tande set a new hill record already in the first round with 136 m. Forfang and Gangnes also reached the 130 m mark with 131.5 m and 130 m in the final. World record holder Anders Fannemel showed a consistent performance with jumps on 128 m and 126 m.
Kenneth Gangnes said afterwards: "We showed a great performance today and I hope it will continue like that. It's a lot of fun to win with these three guys. We are four friends competing together. Tomorrow I want to fight for a top result again. I didn't do so well in Lahti so hopefully I can improve my performance here."
Germany, with Andreas Wank, Andreas Wellinger, Richard Freitag and Severin Freund, was the only team that could keep up with the winners, at least partly. Especially Richard Freitag gained self confidence for Tuesday's individual competition with jumps on 132.5 m and 130 m. World Champion Severin Freund had his longest jump with 132 m in the final, Andreas Wank did a good job as well. Only Andreas Wellinger was struggling a bit and only jumped on 120.5 m. At the end they came in 54.4 points behind the Norwegians.
Severin Freund said: "Kuopio is actually a great hill, but it's not easy to jump here. Richard Freitag brought us in a good position in the second group. Unfortunately the other three jumpers lost some ground. The Norwegians were extremely consistent. That was amazing. That's why we are happy about the second place."
The gap to the third-placed Japanese team was even bigger. Taku Takeuchi, who showed the longest jump of his team with 132.5 m in the final, Noriaki Kasai, Daiki Ito and Kento Sakuyama beat the Slovenes, who were en route to the podium for a long time, on the final stretch. While Kasai was as strong as usual, Ito and Sakuyama lost many meters. But 935.4 points were enough for the podium. Noriaki Kasai said: "It was a close competition. Of course I'm satisfied with the result. We wanted to be on the podium, next time we want to be second or first. I like the hill, Kuopio is my second home."
Austria finished only fourth, also because Stefan Kraft could not show his best performance. The medalist of the Ski Flying World Championships jumped on 119 m twice, in the first round even youngster Philipp Aschenwald was better than him with 121.5 m. Because Michael Hayboeck, who jumped on 125.5 m and 127 m, was also not able to show an outstanding performance and Manuel Poppinger had only one really good jump with 126 m in the final, the team came in close behind Japan with 932.1 points.
The good news for Slovenia was the Peter Prevc was jumping great again after a disappointing weekend in Lahti with 133.5 m and 129 m. Robert Kranjec, who jumped on 131.5 m in the first round, and Jurij Tepes were once again not consistent enough, Jaka Hvala had his best jump with 119 m in the first round. They scored 930.1 points and missed the podium by only 5.3 points.
It was a disappointing evening for the Polish athletes. After they showed a very strong performance in the qualification earlier, the hopes for a top result in the team event were already over after Andrzej Stekala's first jump on only 100.5 m. Solid performances of Stefan Hula, Dawid Kubacki and Piotr Zyla were good enough for 899.5 points and the sixth place. Olympic Champion Kamil Stoch, who won the qualification, was surprisingly not on the team.
Also the Czech jumpers probably wanted more. Lukas Hlava, who landed already at 99 m in the final, and Jakub Janda were simply not good enough today. Jan Matura and Roman Koudelka can hope for a good result in the individual competition after their performances today and secured the seventh place for the team with 858.0 points.
For the Finnish team, qualifying for the final round was everything that was possible. The longest jump of the day was shown by Ville Larinto with 113 m. This will probably not be good enough to score World Cup points on Tuesday. Juho Ojala, Jarkko Maeaettae and Lauri Asikainen could only gain some experience in this competition. The team scored 675.8 points. The team of South Korea could not qualify for the second round.
The individual competition in Kuopio follows on Tuesday at 7:00 pm CET.
