Jørgen Graabak takes the last victory of the season

The victory on the Final Individual Gundersen event in Schonach went to Jørgen Graabak. The Norwegian finished first, beating out Fabian Rießle from Germany for the win. The third rank went to Austria’s Lukas Klapfer who finished 3.1 seconds after Graabak.

Local hero Manuel Faißt set his career-first jumping victory in the two jumping rounds, topping the first one with 103 metres and the second one with 102 metres, giving his a total score of 259.7 metres. Akito Watabe held the second rank at the intermediate point with 252.9 points and one new hill record jump of 108 metres. For the 15 km race, it meant a starting position of 27 seconds behind Faißt.

Norway’s Jan Schmid held the third position after jumping with 248.5 points after two jumps of 102.5 and 100.5 metres, putting him 45 seconds behind the leader for the start of the cross-country. Yesterday’s winner Eric Frenzel was also in the fight for the podium ranks with starting position five. He had to make up one minute and eleven seconds on his leading teammate.

Strong jumpers Seidl, Klemetsen, Portyk, Herola, Laheurte and Costa occupied positons four, seven, nine, ten and eleven but fast skiers Jørgen Graabak and Fabian Rießle started right behind this group on ranks 13 and 14, starting one minute and 41 and 57 seconds behind Faißt.

The starting speed of a lot of the athletes was quite low as they all seemed to have a lot of respect for a long 15 km race at the end of the season and so a leading trio consisting of Akito Watabe, Jan Schmid and Manuel Faißt formed quite quickly in the beginning of the race. Youngster Faißt had to let go of the two other skiers when he fell in a downhill and was soon overtaken by the pursuing group of fast skiers. Jørgen Graabak did a lot of the leading work in this group but brought rivals Rydzek, Rießle and Klapfer and also Eric Frenzel along with him.

The big group caught Akito Watabe first, who had had to let go of Jan Schmid on the last lap, but ultimately the Norwegian was also not strong enough to keep his charging teammate off his back. The podium was finally decided in a finish line sprint in which Graabak clearly was the strongest athlete, beating out Fabian Rießle who in turn bested Lukas Klapfer for the second position. Berni Gruber ended on the unlucky fourth position, Jan Schmid, Johannes Rydzek, Ilkka Herola, Eric Frenzel, Mario Seidl and Akito Watabe completed the Top Ten.

Eric Frenzel won his fourth overall World Cup with a total of 1389 points, Akito Watabe claimed another second position with 1070, only 6 points ahead of Fabian Rießle. Germany won the Nations Cup with 4662 points.
