15 nations fight for Youth Cup victories in Oberstdorf
A record number of over 100 participants and 15 nations made the second Youth Cup of the summer in Oberstdorf into a great success. In smoothly organised competitions, the boys and girls fought for the victories in four categories on two competition days and the group of podium athletes were as diverse as the starting field.
The first competition day, Friday, featured a shorter version of the Individual Gundersen event on a city track in Oberstdorf’s centre with the categories Boys and Girls I and Girls II skiing 2.5 km and the Boys II skiing 4 kilometres. On Saturday, the younger group and the Girls II category roller-skied 4 kilometres in the Tour de Ski cross-country stadium „Ried“, the older boys had to brave 6 km.
In the Boys I category, Jan Andersen from Germany took both wins, beating out Finn Waltteri Karhumaa both times. On the first day, Austria’s Stefan Rettenegger joined the twosome on the podium, the longer competition had Italia’s Daniel Moroder take the last remaining podium position.
Like her male counterpart, Germany’s Jenny Nowak was successful two times in the Girls I category. While her teammate Emily Franke had the better end and the second place on the first day, France’s Josephine Pagnier turned the tables on the second day, took the silver rank and switched places with Franke after having been third on the day before.
The already well-known Austrian ladies Timna Moser and Lisa Eder split the wins in the Girls II category with Norwegian Hanna Midtsundstad joining them on the podium both times as third-placed athlete.
The victory in the Boys II category was extremely hard fought over. On the first day, Finland’s Atte Kettunen was the happy winner and was joined on the podium by Estonian Andreas Ilves and teammate Otto Niittykoski. On Saturday, Ukrainian Dmytro Mazurchuk skied a courageous race and took the victory, leaving the silver rank to Niittykoski and bronze to Ilves.
